LinkedIn plays a huge part when it comes to searching for a new job.

Once your CV has been submitted to a potential employer be it via a direct application or a recruitment agency, one of the first things the employer will do is to search for you on LinkedIn and Social Media.  LinkedIn allows you to search for jobs, post your digital CV, connect with individuals and allows you to be searched for by future employers, recruitment consultants and so on.  The search aspect helps to narrow the parameters making the search more relevant to potential employers.

You want to stand out from the competition and be the one who gets noticed, so how do you go about this and how should you best construct your profile?

First and foremost, your profile must be clear and as many of the other relevant sections of your profile must be filled in as this makes it easier for the relevant industry experts and potential hirers to find you. Make sure you include a background image and a professional photo of yourself.

Write a summary, this could be similar to your personal profile and should include any relevant skills and experience, as then it is easier for you to be found in a search if you do so.  Include your past jobs and experience and the years you were at each company for, along with your education and any skills you have achieved within the past jobs.

Build up your testimonials. This enables those who find you in a search to get more of a feel for who you are, what you are like to work with and your personality and I feel it gives ones profile a significant boost.

Ask those you have worked with in the past or who you currently work with and even any friends for endorsements.  This can be easily done from your LinkedIn Page.

It’s best not to copy and paste your CV to your profile.  You want to attract future employers and recruiters to your profile, so your LinkedIn page needs to show more about your personality and who you are as an individual.  LinkedIn is a professional platform, not like Facebook and other social Networking platforms.

Finally, do ensure you keep your profile up to date, this is the only way opportunities will come through the door!
