Benefits of Temp Work    Nicky has recently joined us to build up the temp desk at Joyce Guiness. We thought that in honour of this, we would explore the advantages of doing temporary work. Understandably, lots of people dismiss temp work in order to focus on getting a permanent role but temping can vary in length and sector and can come with many benefits. Here, Nicky gives us her top tips on temping and the benefits surrounding it. “When I first moved to London, I didn’t know many people or know what I wanted to do. Temping gave me the opportunity to make new friends whilst delving into different sectors which ultimately led me to the creative sector and now recruitment. Each person is different but you don’t know what you want until you try. Temping gives you that flexibility without having to worry if it doesn’t work for you. WHY USE TEMPS?

I started my career working in television running the events at their Head Office. The number of events we used to do used to overwhelm me sometimes. Knowing how much work was involved was incredible and when you are running 3 - 5 events a day, outsourcing some of the work was my only option. Bringing in agency staff was a brilliant way of managing the workload and to ensure efficiency. This used to range from staff helping set up the event, to staff working there, managing the guest list along with meeting and greeting clients. When I became a Personal Assistant, there would be times when you would need to bring in a temp, sometimes at really short notice and this is where having a temp agency is great. You can get a temp within a short amount of time. Whether it’s to cover projects, sickness, holiday’s, peak periods etc. Temporary work is just one of the ways that businesses can offer flexibility and at the same time better meet their own needs. We know that writing your CV can be very daunting.  Where do you even begin?  We have all been there...and so we have decided to give you the inside scoop so there is no way your CV will go to the bottom of the pile! Here is our Golden Guide! Personal Profile: This is the first thing your future employer will read about you and is the part that makes them want to continue reading! Just write a few lines about yourself but don’t write an essay.  Stick to short and sweet!  If you are finding this tricky, ask your friends or family for three good words that would describe you in order to point you in the right direction. Education: Your education years should be listed in reverse chronological order and should be followed by the qualifications and grades you have achieved. Career History: This is where you highlight the tasks and responsibilities that you have carried out in your last role. Make sure you highlight areas that are relevant to the job you are applying for.. How to make yourself stand out from the crowd when applying or interviewing? Of course first and foremost you need to ensure your CV is spotless - no spelling mistakes, grammar is spot on and all written in the correct and SAME tense You must also of course ensure it covers all the skills, experience and qualifications we have gained to date plus a nice personal profile – make this short and generic or if you are wanting to tailor to the role you are applying for – make sure it is correct and relevant to the job. Uni to go or…

Coming to the end of A-levels two years ago most have vague ideas on what they want to do or at least had some inkling on where they wanted to end up -  or no idea at all. For me this wasn’t the case, I knew exactly where I wanted to be and what I wanted, I personally was set on going into neuroscience and cancer biology. My plans, however, were thwarted by mental health, which is greatly acknowledged now, struggling for four years after losing your best friend can change your perspective on a lot of things which was the case for me personally. Nearing my exams, I decided to throw my plans all out the window and go in the complete opposite direction and not go to university at all. Granted this decision was swayed by having to drop two A-levels due to absence but once I had decided not to go, there was no changing my mind. I ended up traveling the world and experiencing new cultures to try and find my new purpose in life. It was when I got back months later when I heard about Oxford Media and Business School. To Caffeine or Not…

We all know caffeine to be a morning savor, or an afternoon pick-me-up but what if it is not holding anything that we are benefiting from apart from a short-lived caffeine hit. It can actually have the opposite effect altogether. We should live our lives with everything in moderation but that is easier said than done. The recommended intake of caffeine is as shown below: Adult Less than 400 mg a day Pregnant Women Less than 200 mg a day Children / Adolescent Less than 2.5mg a day   To put this into some context a filter coffee is 140mg, tea is 75mg, a chocolate bar is 25-50mg and a fizzy drink is 40mg. Research shows that if you can keep to well within the recommended daily intake then you may experience some positive outcomes. Caffeine is a stimulant this may work well for some people but for others, it could be affecting them in areas that you would not assume. If you suffer from anxiety or trouble sleeping at night caffeine will be doing you no favours this is due to a spike in blood pressure which leads to a shot of adrenalin causes heightened anxiety symptoms.
