I was very fortunate to join Pip Cox, Managing Director of Joyce Guiness at a tremendously inspiring event hosted by Addie Pinkster and Alex Corley-Smith of Adelpha. The guest speaker was Jan Babiak a frankly awe-inspiring individual and very successful businesswoman. Jan’s words and her story gave us so many thoughts and ideas it is hard to whittle these down to one area however, Jan’s comments around the benefits of a life plan resonated very strongly with Pip and I.
We are both fortunate in that we meet a wide variety of candidates across different sectors and at various stages of their careers. Experience has shown us that individuals can struggle as they leave university or full-time education as they are faced with a smorgasbord of potential career options. It can be difficult for them to isolate a career path, as well as identifying the right job and company for them.
With that, we wanted to take some time to look at how individuals might put together a career plan that will hopefully provide clarity and framework, not only at the start of their working lives, but also potentially as they progress and explore other industries and roles. Each person is, of course, different and so how you approach your plan will be individual to you however we have set out below some initial thoughts around establishing an initial career framework:
In order to set some firm foundations to your career search, you will need to spend time assessing your personal qualities, skills and values so that you can better understand your personal and career goals. For example – are you outgoing? Do you enjoy being part of a large group or are you more comfortable in smaller group situations or one on one? What makes you feel uncomfortable? Why does it make you feel uncomfortable? What activities do you generally steer away from? Are you more analytical or creative? Are you super organised and structured or do you prefer things more free flowing? Do you have a particular passion for something? What makes this important to you and are there aspects of this you could find in a career?
It can be daunting trying to identify one particular sector or role however, you should use the information you gained in your self-assessment to assess what type of roles would suit you best. Alongside that, do you have friends, family or colleagues in industries that interest you? Talk to them and find out more about what they do. Look for industry groups on social media and follow influencers. Look at websites such as FutureLearn which offer free courses on a wide variety of subjects – see what interests you and take an online course to explore more. Talk to recruiters, industry professionals – think about volunteering or interning. Essentially, anything that will give you more understanding or exposure to potential industry areas.
Think about what goals you want to achieve – and over what time-frame. Do you want to retire at 40? What is/are the industry sector/s you want to work in? Do you want to work part-time? Is it important to you to work for a social enterprise? Is travelling and living in another city something you want to do? Is there a certain amount you have/want to earn? What type of company do you want to work for? To make the setting of your goals as effective as possible, you should set yourself timeframes and keep reviewing your goals against these. Keep updating your goals – they are a movable feast – as your career and life progresses, so too will your goals develop, expand and even completely change. The key is to be diligent and continually assess and review your goals as you move through your career, life and achievements.
Having assessed yourself, identified some career options and set some preliminary goals – spend some time thinking about an action plan and strategy to implement this. Again, ensure that you have measurable timescales to achieve each action point. Identify potential companies and recruitment firms to approach. Ensure your CV is as relevant as possible with clear identification of skills and experience. Get help with this if you’re not sure. Make sure your online profiles are up to date and professional. Assess your current skill-set to see if it matches the requirements of your target role. If not, are there additional courses you can take to gain these qualifications? Can these be undertaken alongside working? What changes do you need to make (i.e. location, further study) to enhance your prospects? Look at your personal and professional network and identify individuals in the type of roles that interest you and approach them for input and guidance. Approach individuals out of your network – make and develop new contacts! Think about having a mentor who can advise and guide you.
The wonderful thing about having a career plan is that it provides focus in identifying the key areas that you want to develop and pursue, therefore making the right choice of role and company that much more achievable and accessible. Alongside that, having a plan offers a quantifiable way to measure your achievements and progress. As you achieve your goals, your plans and strategy will change too and thus the career plan will provide a valuable tool throughout your working life.

As the end of January is around the corner, we thought we could squeeze in one more January themed message... We didn’t want to start 2022 with the “New Year, new you” mantra. Instead, we think it’s time to say New Year, old you is good too - and to embrace life and its flaws. Perfectly imperfect…nothing is ever completely right so to weigh up, work with and capitalise on the positives is far more empowering than getting caught up on what’s negative. Buddha once said, "Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die." Of course, it’s vital to be alive to how to avoid or step around problematic hurdles that life can throw at you. However, emotional or operational curve balls are inevitable, so acceptance of the potential for challenge is a much more positive approach, and key to not becoming overwhelmed or consumed by whatever the problem is. We then can be more objective about working towards a conscious solution. From this we can grow, personally, emotionally, and professionally. That said, it’s hard to maintain a positive frame of mind when the media narrative can be so negative. It’s that time again when I begin to think about and plan for the year ahead but also look back over the past twelve months. It feels more important than ever to reflect upon everything that has happened, and what knowledge I can take away from this time. We have all been impacted by Covid, negatively and positively I expect; but whatever the experience, all those that I have spoken to are busier than expected - especially this last 6 months. We all know caffeine to be a morning savor, or an afternoon pick-me-up but what if it is not holding anything that we are benefiting from apart from a short-lived caffeine hit. It can actually have the opposite effect altogether. We should live our lives with everything in moderation but that is easier said than done. Coming to the end of A-levels two years ago most have vague ideas on what they want to do or at least had some inkling on where they wanted to end up - or no idea at all. For me this wasn’t the case, I knew exactly where I wanted to be and what I wanted, I personally was set on going into neuroscience and cancer biology. When it comes to finishing school and having to take your next step, it can be very intimidating and scary. There are so many options and limitations that sometimes you can get overwhelmed. Going back and going green. If we have learned something from this crazy Covid existence it is that we need to be more protective of ourselves as well as our environment. You may not be rushing back to the office, you may go back and do a 'Hybrid' work week, but any time you spend there and at home, you can improve your carbon footprint. Virtual interviews are becoming the ‘norm’ and for a lot of people it can be hard to do an interview virtually as most people find it tricky to shine on screen. Find an area where you won’t be disturbed – find a room/area that no children can barge into or barking dogs wont stray into. Accompanying your CV with a well written cover letter is a great way to create that memorable ‘first impression’ for the person reviewing your application, and therefore increasing your chance to secure that all important interview! As you can imagine, employers receive many applications for vacant roles, and a clear and concise cover letter will increase your opportunity of showing your suitability for the role. You can use this letter to highlight to the employer/ recruiter the relevant skills that you believe align with the role you are applying for, as well as the key points that drew you to both it, but just as importantly, the company. LinkedIn allows you to search for jobs, post your digital CV, connect with individuals and allows you to be searched for by future employers, recruitment consultants and so on. The search aspect helps to narrow the parameters making the search more relevant to potential employers. You want to stand out from the competition and be the one who gets noticed, so how do you go about this and how should you best construct your profile? First and foremost, your profile must be clear and as many of the other relevant sections of your profile must be filled in as this makes it easier for the relevant industry experts and potential hirers to find you. It can be daunting when the time for salary reviews come up. It is best to prep yourself ahead of time and be honest about how you feel in the role - if you have exceeded expectations, met goals and been consistent with good time keeping, being a good team player etc. If so then go in with this in mind and remain calm and confident. Have a list (in your head) as to why you feel you deserve the pay rise. It may be that your employer needs some reminding! This way you have all of the information at hand and if it is applicable then also raise any targets and new business that you may have brought in. Employers after all are looking after the bottom line. Should you not receive a pay rise do not be disheartened, it is worth being brave and asking your manager why, it is constructive for you to know, so that you can move forward in an informed way. It may be worth suggesting that if there are any courses you could take to add to your skill set, it could help out for any further salary reviews in the future. Every year as a team, we like to do something a little different and take the opportunity to spend some time together outside of the office. This year was no exception and we have returned to the office after a fantastic day and a half outside of London. On Tuesday we brought our overnight bags packed with thermals and hot water bottles into the office and left work after lunch to head to Hampshire where we would be glamping for the night. We arrived at our destination, Manor Farm, which is part of the Featherdown Collection, and were greeted by clear blue skies and beautiful views over the fields and hills. Manor farm offers a collection of accommodation options and we had opted for the tents which have a hot tub and separate showers. Being glamping, there was no electricity and so the most important thing was to get the stoves lit to heat the tents, and our food(!), along with lighting the hot tubs for some evening entertainment. If you follow our blogs and social media, you will know that we have followed Kiko Matthews over the past year or two and you will know what amazing challenges she has overcome. Among other things, in March 2018, Kiko became the fastest woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean as a solo rower. She did this 3284 mile row in 49 days, 7 hours and 15 minutes, which is a whole week faster than the previous record holder. Kiko is now taking on a different challenge; cycling the coast of the UK and Northern Ireland with the intention of raising awareness of the problem of single use plastic. In recent years, the dramatic effects that plastics are having on the environment and the world’s oceans has been much more publicised and more steps are being taken towards the prevention of the amount of plastic. The amount of plastic straws being used has been cut down drastically, people are carrying reusable coffee cups, metal and glass bottles are becoming more and more popular and cotton buds have been changed from plastic to paper stems. Shops are slowly taking steps towards reducing their plastic consumption as well, with new plastic free aisles being introduced by various companies. Our team (Team JG) did something different this week; we went to Shaftsbury Avenue to try out the new Crystal Maze. If you were ever a fan of the show you will know how the game works. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 90’s show, you are led through a ‘maze’ or different themed rooms with various challenges in each. Led by an enthusiastic host, you are left to work as a team and must help each other pass each challenge. This was not just your everyday work outing, this was a team building exercise! This was a time for us to combine our expertise and skills to work together and encourage each other to win the game and therefore collect as many crystals as possible. Rewind to a year ago and I knew nothing about recruitment agencies and neither did my friends. We were all talking about moving to London and looking for jobs and we thought the way we would do this would be by looking online and networking. We didn’t realise that there were people who would help us find our dream jobs. A couple of months into our year of studying on a secretarial course, some recruitment agencies came in and started talking to us about our options following our graduation. Two of these talks in and I was still none the wiser. Why would people help find us jobs and if they would, how much would it cost us? This year at Joyce Guiness we have decided to support two London based charities. With this, we intend to raise awareness for these charities and raise money through hosting an event and setting ourselves a challenge or two throughout the year. We have selected two very different charities and we hope that they will both benefit from our efforts. The first of these charities is The Graham Hughes International Charity, for patients with Hughes syndrome (also known as “sticky blood”). This syndrome was only reported for the first time in 1983 and can have serious complications and negative health effects to those who have it. “Sticky blood” affects all ages, and both sexes. It is a major cause of thrombosis and a cause of stroke and heart attack if untreated. It can cause migraine, memory loss, and balance and visual problems. In women, Hughes syndrome is the most common, treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage. The charity’s aim is: “to educate and empower patients by raising awareness globally about Hughes Syndrome” and to “promote better understanding and management of the condition by medical professionals, thereby improving patient care”. I started my career working in television running the events at their Head Office. The number of events we used to do used to overwhelm me sometimes. Knowing how much work was involved was incredible and when you are running 3 - 5 events a day, outsourcing some of the work was my only option. Bringing in agency staff was a brilliant way of managing the workload and to ensure efficiency. With every New Year, there comes the carefully mulled over resolutions and the determination that this year will be the year in which they are kept. For us, 2017 is going to be our year to be the fittest, healthiest and happiest we have been. The Oxford Dictionary word of the year 2016 was ‘Hygge’, and I don’t know about you, but I have seen the phrase being thrown around plenty in the last few months. Hygge is the Danish concept of everything warm and cosy. Therefore making ordinary, everyday things into the extraordinary. If you are anything like me, Christmas was a time to fully embrace Hygge and completely ditch any sort of exercise routine which was in place before the festive season. Now, it is time to tone down the Hygge- well the indulgence part of it anyway and ramp up the fitness. Whilst raising a considerable amount of money for breast cancer, she is also managing to walk a marathon (26.2 miles!) through the streets of London at night. Moving to London can be quite daunting. You suddenly find yourself in a big city, overwhelmed with all the tourist attractions you can visit and all the different people you can meet. I moved up to London last November (yes I’ve been a Londoner for a whole year!) and I have been trying to do and see as many things London has to offer – tick as many things off the ‘London Bucket List’ as possible; after all London is home to most of England’s Top 10 attractions. If you live in one of the world’s best cities, you need to make the most of it! Here is a list of a few things that I’ve done so far, things that I recommend every first time Londoner MUST do! Sky Garden I went for dinner at the Darwin Brasserie at the Sky Garden for my birthday and it is one of the best places I’ve visted. Of course you can’t dine out here every night but it is a lovely treat. The view is absolutely amazing and the atmosphere is something else. You can stroll around the ‘garden’ checking out the London skyline whist finishing the night off eating one of the yummiest dinners. It’s becoming increasingly important to have a balance between work and leading a normal life especially as technology intrudes more and more. Government guidelines state you can’t work more than 48 hours a week on average, but employees are exceeding these timings more frequently. To ease the challenge of turning off at the end of the day we’ve put together some tips to help achieve that desired work-life balance. Unplug Having emails on your phones makes it easier for work to follow you home. Unless you have a job that requires you to have flexibility with your work life, turn your phone off as soon as you get home. Remember that it’s not a necessity to check your emails 24/7. Furthermore, research shows that if you look at your phone last thing at night, your sleep is severely disrupted. The light given off prevents the release of melatonin which is responsible for letting your brain know that its bed time. Step away from the temptation by unplugging completely. Closure is a necessity. Lots of sleep When you’ve had a busy day, the worst thing you can do is have zero sleep. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep so you can re-energize after work. Interviews can be scary as it’s the first chance your prospective employee gets of deciding whether or not you’d be a great fit for them, and after all, first impressions count. We’ve put together some helpful tips and pointers to support you along the way: Research the company thoroughly – it’s important to have developed an understanding as it demonstrates your keen and interested in what the company does Be sure you know the time, date and location of the interview and name of the person you are meeting Plan your route (try to arrive 10 minutes before your interview in order to compose yourself and calm the nerves!) Despite what the weather would suggest, we in the midst of summer. Summer always brings about the need to ditch the sugar and pick up the slightly healthy alternative. Here at JG we’ve hopped on this bandwagon and have become obsessed with all things to do with healthy drinks. It’s an easy way to get your vitamin fix without going OTT. 1) Mello Drinks We love this drink. It is made simply of pressed and de-seeded watermelons. It’s the perfect way to keep cool and refreshed during the ‘hot’ summer. A drink full of mineral, vitamins and antioxidants that gives you that healthy boost. 2) What a Melon This is a drink which you won’t find on the shop shelves just yet, but it sounds utterly delicious. As soon as you graduate from university, the next step for most people is to find a job. London has so many opportunities but unfortunately the job hunt for most is not always straightforward… It can be so disheartening when you send out hundreds of applications to different companies and hear nothing back. So how do you go about it? Firstly, it would be an idea to apply to some London based agencies. As a first time jobber it is difficult knowing exactly what you want to do and how to go about getting it, and agencies can help with this. Recruitment agencies are there to help when you’re not sure which direction you want to go in – they make the job hunt appear less daunting, so it’s a good idea to register with as many agencies as possible. The registering part is pretty easy – they go through your CV and ask questions. You get to talk all about yourself, your interests, your ambitions, what jobs you’re interested and those that you’re not. Wimbledon 2016 is well and truly underway. It’s the event in the British calendar that makes us all suddenly have a new-found interest in tennis. We all stock up on Pimm’s, strawberries and cream, and anything else that symbolises Britain to enjoy this summer sport. If you want to do something quintessentially British this week then it has to be Henley Royal Regatta. The best known rowing regatta in the world which was established in 1839. It spreads over 5 days, Wednesday - Sunday and is always over the first weekend in July. (As you weave along the busy pavements past the queues of traffic you will probably hear all the radios tuned in to the Wimbledon Commentary.) Back to Henley; The rowers go head to head in knock out competitions that span a 1 mile course - starting at Temple Island upstream before heading towards Henley Bridge. Getting there from London is quite easy as there is a train station in Henley albeit a little walk to the river - It’s a wonderful British occasion with competitors from all over the world - schools to olympians, men and women, boys and girls – all competing in a variety of classes including: eights, cox less pairs, sculls, coxed pairs. For the spectators there are endless spots you can view the event which spans right along the course. There are numerous enclosures along both banks of the Thames and of course there is plenty of action on the water with parties on boats big and small. Some people are apprehensive when you mention Work Experience. You may not be asked to get involved with the most exciting and important projects, and it might not last for a huge amount of time, but gaining some work experience could be the best step to take towards getting that perfect role. Work experience is a fantastic opportunity to gain some exposure to office life; how things work, logistics, day-to-day goings on, the different types of roles in an office and generally how the whole office system works. When a company looks to employ someone for an office role, they often want to see a demonstration of office work – and this is where work experience comes into play. They like to see that you have had an insight into office life. Temping always seems scary! People see it as the limbo between a job and no job, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is a great opportunity to learn some new skills and learn what you like and don’t like about a job. As with any job or new experience it can feel like the first day of school, but you’ve survived that and you can survive this. Remember you are there because they need your assistance. Once a year our MD, Pip, takes us away for two days on a little surprise trip. It is a great way to do a little ‘team bonding’ as well as getting to know one another out of an office environment. This year our surprise trip was to HENLEY ON THAMES!
